A New Vision Begins
Darren J. Akerman

The ballots have been cast, and the votes are in: the name of the ‘new’ school is official. So many students and community took part in the process that it took a combined several hours to determine the winner. Superintendent Wilhelm made the announcement: Harpswell Community School.

With the end of the 2010-11 school year, I am excited by the many changes we have made together and will assist Kerry Bailey in making her transition as Principal over the summer. The excellent work I have seen in the areas of literacy, technology, and a student-centered environment make me proud to remain a part of MSAD 75.

I am honored to have served as Principal for the Harpswell Islands School. It is my sincere belief that the students, staff, parents, and communities will continue to make Harpswell Community School a joyful place for learning and preparing for the future.

I also wish to extend my thanks to retiring Superintendent, Michael Wilhelm, newly appointed Superintendent, Brad Smith, and Principal Michael Estes at West Harpswell School. I am especially grateful for the support of staff, parents, and community members. Most of all, I thank the students who gave me the opportunity to lead and learn.

Best wishes for many years to come.

Sincerely,
Darren J. Akerman

Principal Bailey

A Welcome Letter from our Future Principal, Kerry Bailey

Dear Parents of our NEW Harpswell
Community School,

I am delighted to be coming on board as your new principal and I can’t wait to get started!  You will probably see my car in the parking lot over the summer and you are always welcome to call for a time to chat and to introduce yourselves.  I know we will have plenty of time to get to know one another next year, but I also know that you will be curious about your “new principal” and the great things we will have in store for your child and /or children at our new school.  I am fully dedicated to making sure that Harpswell Community School will be safe, welcoming and an exceptional place for success and learning.  Our children deserve no less! Camp Anyone?
Summer camp can be a wonderful opportunity to make friends, try out new activities, spread your wings, build self- confidence, and.....so much more.  I have information about many camps and summer activities for kids in my office.  If a child has a strong desire to go to camp, scholarships can make camp possible for families who could not otherwise afford it.   If you have any interest in learning more, please call me or stop by my office soon.

Detention Policy

Classroom management and positive behavioral management are important aspects of a safe school. In order to emphasize our expectations concerning appropriate student behavior, we will be implementing a detention policy on Thursday and Friday afternoons from 3:40-5:00pm.

If a student is referred for detention, parents will be notified the day before and will need to pick up their child by 5:00pm. The detention area (across the hall from Room # 1) will be staffed. Student will be expected to complete school work.
